Antique pendulum wall clocks are a wonderful addition to your home. They are beautiful clocks, and can be the most accurate time keepers. These clocks were used for centuries, and require no electricity or battery power to run. However, finding the clocks in good condition can be a chore, especially if you cannot afford antique prices.
However, if you know where to look you can find antique pendulum wall clocks at reasonable prices. Thrift stores, estate sales, and garage sales are just some of the places to look. Most often, these venues do not realize how much the clock is actually worth, and you can pick one up for very little compared to antique stores.
There are some drawbacks to this, of course. First, you want to make sure the clock actually works. This is not a hard thing to do, since the clocks do not require power to run. Simply set the clock and start the pendulum. If the clock keeps good time for around five minutes, it is probably in good working order.
The other thing to look for is wear on the wood. If you know how to refinish wood, you can generally restore pendulum wall clocks that are in good working condition, but don’t look very nice. The best way to do this is to strip what varnish is on the clock, sand down the wood, and apply new varnish, as well as a wax coat to protect the wood.
If you don’t know how to refinish the wood, you should probably look for a pendulum wall clock that is already in good condition. Estate sales will be a more likely place to find these than thrift stores or garage sales. You can also find knock off pendulum clocks that run on batteries for next to nothing in department stores, if you simply want the look of the antique and not the antique itself.
